Saudi Arabia’s Curriculum of Intolerance

WASHINGTON – A symposium discussing the newly released report Saudi Arabia’s Curriculum of Intolerance brought together a panel of experts and scholars who concluded that the official Saudi set of textbooks used by more than 5 million students of Islam is an ‘‘incubator for terrorism.’’

“One of the things that is absolutely manifested – looking back at the events that have already happened – is that there is an incubator for the ideas of terrorism,” said Danielle Pletka, the symposium moderator and vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at American Enterprise Institute. “An incubator that is filled with hatred of the West, with ‘can’ts’ about Christian and Jews, with [the sense] of separateness…”

“While I don’t think that is necessarily what Islam is all about, it is certainly what a lot of the textbooks propagated by the Saudi government contain.”

On Wednesday, one day following the release of the report on the Saudi textbooks by Freedom House’s Center for Religious Freedom, Pletka, the Center’s director Nina Shea, and Saudi scholar Ali al-Ahmed took part in a panel discussion hosted by the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research.

Al-Ahmed, an expert on Saudi political affairs, believes that the education system plays a significant part in creating terrorists.

“The Saudi education system is often an ignored front in the war on terror,” said al-Ahmed. “The Saudi 9/11 hijackers were products of this education system. As children they were indoctrinated with this curriculum that is full of hatred and hostility to others. It is not hard for them to be converted to al-Qaeda terrorists in a matter of months….

“Reforming the Saudi education system must be an integral part of the war on terrorism, before it is too late.”

Freedom House’s Shea, the principal author of the report documenting the textbooks, elaborated on the use of Saudi religious education to teach “intolerance” against unbelievers. She noted that even a Saudi royal study group analyzing the kingdom’s religious study curriculum a couple of years ago found that the curriculum for boys on religion “encourages violence towards others and misguides the people into believing that in order to safeguard their own religion, they must violently repress and even physically eliminate the other.”

Al-Ahmed agrees.

“The textbooks teach hatred and violence against other Muslims who do not follow Wahhabi Islam and against all non-Muslims,” he said.

“These textbooks turn millions of children into hateful, angry, and misinformed youths that are just one step away from being the perfect terrorist.”

Both al-Ahmed and Shea highlighted the network of belief schools and academy in 19 of the world’s capitals that use these Islamic text including London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Moscow, Beijing and Washington, D.C.

During her speech, Shea refuted the Saudi government’s repeated assertions that they have removed intolerance from the textbooks and “cleaned” them up.

“What we found in this report is that it is an ideological curriculum of intolerance against the unbelievers, or polytheists,” said Shea. “And this includes explicitly Christians, Jews, and other Muslims who are all demonized. They assert that peaceful co-existence is not possible.”

“The first grade text condemns Christians and Jews explicitly to hellfire, plant idea that they are evil. Keep in mind that this is not a religion talking but the government of Saudi Arabia; this is the official textbook.”

Shea summarized some of the indoctrination taught to students in Saudi Arabia and students using the texts around the world: fourth graders are taught that Muslims must hate the unbelievers; ninth graders’ text say Jews and Christians are enemies of believers; eleventh grade students are instructed not to greet the infidels; and twelfth graders are taught that it is a religious obligation for Muslims to engage in battle against the infidels to spread the faith or a military jihad.

“So why is this important?” the human rights lawyer asked. “In addition to being the intellectual foundation for terrorism, one must keep in mind that Saudis are trying to assert themselves as the most authoritative voice within Islam.”

Shea also pointed out that the Saudi government has “unlimited funds for these propaganda” and it is estimated that the country spends three times as much on ideological propaganda as the Soviets did per a year during the height of the cold war.

“Instead of hate, these textbooks must teach more than tolerance,” concluded al-Ahmed. “Tolerance is not enough. It must teach harmony, cooperation, and even to embrace the others in humanity. There are million of children that are victims, and that is why these textbooks must be reformed now.

“These toxic seeds of hate and bigotry implanted in the young minds are more dangerous than tons of explosives in the hands of terrorists.”

Muslim cleric arrested over child bride, defends saying Muhammad had Ayesha why cant I?

A WEALTHY Indonesian Muslim cleric who married a 12-year-old girl faces up to 15 years in jail after being arrested for obscenity, local media reports.

Pujiono Cayho Widiyanto, a 43-year-old businessman and cleric, was arrested by police in the Central Java city of Semarang yesterday, The Jakarta Globe English-language daily said.

Mr Widiyanto sparked nationwide outrage by taking a poor village girl, Lutfiana Ulfa, as his second wife in August last year.

“We’ve collected enough evidence to charge him with under age obscenity under the Criminal Code,” chief detective Royhardi Siahaan was quoted as saying, adding the charges carried a maximum of 15 years’ jail.

The cleric was arrested after police collected documents proving Ulfa was under age, Mr Siahaan said.

Mr Widiyanto and his supporters say his actions are acceptable under Islam and that  Islamic prophet Muhammad had married Ayesha at the age 6 and that why cant he?  but others say he should abide by state law, which sets 16 as the minimum age for marriage.

Police were not immediately available to confirm the report.

Although Indonesian law carries stiff penalties for pedophilia, arranged marriages between older men and girls are common in poor rural areas, but are not registered with the government.

About 90 per cent of Indonesia’s 234 million people are Muslim, but the country has sizeable Hindu, Buddhist and Christian minorities.

Class dismissed in Swat Valley

What Strict Islam or Sharia can do to the culture and education of a place is so evident from this video, very touching indeed. Class dismissed in Swat Valley Pakistan is a documentary profiling an 11-year-old Pakistani girl on the last day before the Taliban close down her school.  This is exactly what Hardcore Muslims with the support of Pakistani Army wanted to do in neighboring Kashmir valley, India. Indian Army has successfully been resisting this for the last 20 years. Europe and America should be aware of this; Sharia starts from small seemingly non harmful activity like a head scarf for girls and ladies to slowly transgress to extremes like this. Let us not take our democracies, which our fathers and forefathers gifted us, for granted and be complacent.

Demonstration in London Against Islamic Law

anti-shariaLondon — Nearly 600 people joined the One Law for All anti-racist rally against Sharia and religious-based laws in Britain and elsewhere and in defence of citizenship and universal rights in Trafalgar Square and marched towards Red Lion Square in London. Hundreds then joined our public meeting to discuss and debate Sharia, Sexual Apartheid and Women’s Rights. Our protest was met with widespread support and left many feeling inspired and invigorated. It was also covered by the mainstream media, including BBC Radio 4, BBC 5Live, BBC Wales, and the Times.

The rally of several hundred heard a number of speakers denouncing the policy of accommodation and appeasement of the political Islamic movement. A. C. Grayling in his speech said: ‘Once you start fragmenting society, once you start allowing different groups in society to apply different standards, you get very profound injustices and it is almost always women who suffer these injustices. We have to fight hard to keep one law for everybody.’

Parisa who was refused a divorce from a violent husband said: ‘Ten years of my life is gone because of Sharia law. I want to stop it. Please help to stop it. It is not fair. I had a good uncle who helped me to escape but what about others who don’t have a chance to run away. I saw that many, many times.’

Terry Sanderson, the president of the National Secular Society, said: ‘We do not need another legal system running in parallel… Sharia is creeping into our legal system and society and we must stop it in its tracks and now!’

Fariborz Pooya, head of the Iranian Secular Society, said ‘the introduction of Sharia is a betrayal of thousands of women and children and leaves them at the mercy of Islamist groups.’

After listening to a number of speeches, including from Sargul Ahmad, Jalil Jalili, Shiva Mahbobi, Reza Moradi, Maryam Namazie, Saeed Parto, Sohaila Sharifi and Bahram Soroush the crowd then marched through Strand and Kings Way to Red Lion Square with demands to end Sharia law in the UK and elsewhere. At Conway Hall, they heard live music from the group, Raised Voices, then joined a public meeting and heard a panel of distinguished speakers discuss Sharia Law, Sexual Apartheid and Women’s Rights. The meeting was chaired by Sohaila Sharifi (Central Council of Equal Rights Now – Organisation against Women’s Discrimination in Iran). Speakers included Yasmin Alibhai-Brown (Journalist and British Muslims for Secular Democracy Chair), Naser Khader (Democratic Muslims Founder), Kenan Malik (Writer and Broadcaster); Yasaman Molazadeh (One Law for All Legal Coordinator); Maryam Namazie (Equal Rights Now – Organisation against Women’s Discrimination in Iran, One Law for All and Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain Spokesperson), Pragna Patel (Southall Black Sisters and Women Against Fundamentalism founding member), Fariborz Pooya (Iranian Secular Society and Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain Chair), and Carla Revere (Lawyers’ Secular Society Chair). Sargul Ahmad (International Campaign against Civil Law in Kurdistan Iraq head) also spoke about the situation in Iraq under Sharia and the need for international solidarity.

March 7 was One Law for All’s first warning to the British government and the political Islamic movement. As Maryam Namazie said on the day: “We won’t stand idly by whilst the British government relegates a huge segment of our society to sham courts and regressive rules and appeases the Islamists here or elsewhere. And we will bring the political Islamic movement to its knees in Britain in much the same way that people are doing in Iran and elsewhere.” She added: “We will keep growing in numbers and strength until we get rid of Sharia councils and religious tribunal’s altogether.”

Italy: Muslims are the main terrorist threat

Rome, 10 March (AKI) – The Italian government investigated 216 terror threats against Italy last year, concluding that Islamist cells were the “primary threat to the public interest, both inside Italy and abroad,” according to a report released on Tuesday.

The extent of the terror threat was revealed in an anti-terrorism report presented to the department of information security.

Al-Qaeda’s leadership “is still playing a central role” in international terrorism, the report said, adding that investigators were giving priority to probes of jihadist plots.

In Italy, Islamist terror cells were “fluid and scattered”, tending to coalesce around “charismatic individuals,” the report stated.

Prisons are an increasingly important jihadist recruiting ground, where convicted Islamist terrorists are indoctrinating young detainees, the report said.

It said the northern region of Lombardy is one of the main strongholds of Islamist radicalism, “where elements already known to the police are being joined by new recruits and gradually replaced.”

Another hotspot is the southern Campania region surrounding Naples. “Here, foreign extremists are finding synergies with North African counterfeiters,” said the report.

Other sensitive areas include the northern Piemonte, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna regions and the central Tuscany region, the report noted.

“The threat to Italy has become a rapidly changing and unpredictable one,” it said.

The report stressed the importance of the Internet to Islamist terrorists in Italy and elsewhere.

“The Internet has become a primary reference point and source of inspiration for so-called lone terrorists seeking to wage jihad,” the report said.

The “multinational” nature of jihadist cells and networks, the increasing number of “home-grown” militants, and the importance of the Internet for radicalizing, recruiting and training, characterize Islamist terrorism throughout Europe, the report concluded.
